Kenny Logan: The Unyielding Champion Against MND
Scottish rugby legend Kenny Logan is on a mission—a mission that won't end until a cure for motor neurone disease (MND) is discovered. Ready to lead an exhilarating 555-mile fundraising cycle challenge, he’s honoring the memory of his late teammate, Doddie Weir.
Pedal to Glory: Doddie's Lions Challenge Awaits!
This thrilling event, dubbed Doddie’s Lions Challenge, will see Logan accompanied by Weir's son, Hamish, and a star-studded lineup of over 50 celebrities and former players. Their goal? To raise a staggering £500,000 for the My Name’s Doddie Foundation and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Founded by Weir in 2017 after his own MND diagnosis, this foundation carries on his legacy after his passing at 52 in 2022.
Star Power on Two Wheels!
Famous names joining the ride include former Scotland football star Ally McCoist, broadcaster Gabby Logan (Kenny's wife), and Battlestar Galactica's Jamie Bamber. This week-long endurance trek, inspired by the upcoming British and Irish Lions tour, will take them through the breathtaking, rugged landscapes of Ireland's rugby heartlands.
Challenging Terrain: The Route Ahead
Participants will tackle approximately 100 miles a day, with stops at the original clubs of legendary Irish Lions players. The challenge concludes at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on June 20, where they will present the match ball before Ireland faces off against Argentina.
Beyond Fundraising: A Message of Hope
Logan’s previous fundraiser, the Rugby World Cup Challenge from Edinburgh to Paris in 2023, brilliantly combined cycling and walking, raising nearly £1 million for MND research.
"We’re not walking this time—I hated that part!" Logan shared with a chuckle. "Yes, we’re raising money, but more importantly, we’re bringing hope to those battling MND. Awareness has surged since Doddie's passing, but funding remains crucial to keep the momentum going."
A Legacy of Determination and Community
With nearly £20 million committed to MND research, Logan knows this is just the beginning. "Doddie would be proud of what we’ve accomplished, but he’d also push us to go farther, faster. Until there’s a cure, we keep going—that’s what he would have wanted, and it’s our duty to honor that."
The challenge promises not only physical endurance but also camaraderie akin to a Lions tour, uniting diverse individuals in a cause greater than themselves.
A Moment of Connection
Logan recalls a deeply moving moment during the previous ride: "Descending a hill in France, engulfed in clouds, a yellow and blue balloon floated into view. It felt like Doddie was right there with us. It’s about enduring hardships while celebrating the people who’ve come together for this fight."
Join the Fight Against MND!
Paul Thompson, fundraising director at My Name’s Doddie Foundation, expressed pride in their commitment to MND research, emphasizing there's still much work to do. "Kenny’s tireless energy and unifying spirit are incredible. The funds raised through this challenge will be pivotal in our quest for effective treatments and ultimately, a cure for MND. We urge everyone to get behind this cause!"
Earlier this year, the foundation made a groundbreaking £4 million investment in four pioneering MND research projects as part of its Catalysing A Cure strategy, aiming to hasten scientific breakthroughs.
