A Call to Action for Polio Eradication

Today, on the launch of World Immunisation Week, the UK is rallying against one of the world’s oldest and most preventable diseases—polio. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has launched the inspiring ‘Rise Together’ campaign, urging everyone to get moving for a powerful cause. From April 24 to May 24, participants can log every step, stride, stroke, or spin to collectively reach a remarkable target.

40 Million Minutes for a Polio-Free Future

The campaign urges the public to achieve a combined total of 40 million minutes of physical activity on Strava. This target carries deep significance: half of the minutes represent those who walk today because of lifesaving vaccines, while the other half honors the health workers tirelessly battling to eradicate polio once and for all.

Dr. Jamal Ahmed from the World Health Organization emphasized the importance of this movement: "Polio has robbed countless children of healthy futures. With the help of the UK, millions are alive today. We’ve come too far to backslide—let’s work together to finish the job!"

Why Your Involvement Matters Now More Than Ever

Despite a 99% decrease in polio cases since 1988, the final phase is the hardest, as recent waste sample detections in London and several European cities have shown. This serves as a stark warning that polio can re-emerge even in areas that were once free from the virus.

The UK has a rich history of supporting a polio-free future, but now, it needs public backing more than ever. Judith Diment from Rotary International states, "The UK has been at the forefront of this battle for decades. Participation in this challenge sends a powerful message to leaders: the health of children everywhere still matters to us!"

Meet the Inspiring Leaders of the Movement

A group of remarkable ambassadors will lead the campaign, including Anne Wafula Strike, a Paralympian and polio survivor, endurance runner Deo Kato, wellbeing expert Adrienne Adhami, champion of inclusive fitness Haroon Mota, and ultra-endurance athlete Sophie Grace Holmes. They aim to rally communities and share their personal stories to inspire widespread involvement.

Anne Wafula Strike passionately shared, "No child should suffer paralysis from a disease we can prevent. This challenge is our call to protect those still at risk from polio and other preventable diseases—all children deserve safety!"

How to Get Involved and Make a Difference

Participating in the ‘Rise Together’ campaign is easy! Simply log your activities on Strava and contribute to the collective 40 million minutes challenge. Whether it’s a daily walk, a weekend bike ride, or even a marathon, every effort counts.

Together, We Can End Polio!

More than just visibility, this initiative aims to create tangible impact. As global funding for the GPEI enters a critical phase, public participation is crucial to show momentum and solidarity—underscoring the need for continued investment at a time when UK leadership in global health is vital.
