Perplexity AI, a startup supported by Jeff Bezos, is making significant strides to take on Alphabet Inc.’s Google in the digital advertising space. The San Francisco-based company is currently in discussions with leading brands such as Nike and Marriott, seeking to revolutionize the way ads are served online.

The New Advertising Model:

Perplexity AI is developing a unique “sponsored” question system that provides a potent alternative to Google's auction-based advertising model, which has dominated the $300 billion digital ad industry. This innovative approach allows brands to bid for a sponsored question, complete with an AI-generated answer that has been approved by the advertiser. The company plans to roll out this ad system by the end of the year.

CEO Aravind Srinivas, a former intern at Google, has emphasized the importance of relevance in advertising, noting, “Ads are really useful when they are relevant and coming from brands that are high quality, and a lot of people make purchases based on that.” He envisions the new advertising system as “a money-printing machine” for brands.

Cost-Effective Alternatives:

Perplexity’s model charges marketers on a Cost Per Mille (CPM) basis, priced at over $50 for every 1,000 impressions. This is significantly lower compared to Google’s estimated cost of $1,100 for the same number of impressions, presenting a compelling case for companies looking for more economical advertising solutions.

Impressive Growth and Support:

Since becoming a unicorn earlier this year with a valuation exceeding $1 billion, Perplexity AI has experienced remarkable growth, with revenue and usage skyrocketing by 700% since January. The AI-powered search engine has answered approximately 250 million questions in just the last month alone, a dramatic increase from the 500 million queries recorded for the entirety of the previous year.

The startup boasts an impressive roster of investors, including Nvidia Corporation, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy, and Yann LeCun, chief AI scientist at Meta Platforms.

Facing Controversy:

However, Perplexity AI has faced scrutiny, with accusations of plagiarism from Forbes and Wired, alleging that the platform replicated articles without proper attribution. Acknowledging the concerns, Perplexity stated that it has implemented changes to its user interface to enhance citation clarity and to ensure compliance with content restrictions imposed by certain websites.

As Perplexity AI positions itself to challenge Google’s dominance in the digital ad market, it remains to be seen whether this innovative approach can indeed reshape the landscape and provide brands with a viable, lower-cost alternative to traditional platforms.
