Japan Panel Raises Alarm: 'Mega Quake' Probability Reaches a Staggering 82%
TOKYO – A government panel in Japan has increased the estimated chances of a catastrophic “mega quake” occurring in the next 30 years to as high as 82%. This sobering update, revealed on January 16, highlights the ongoing threat of devastating seismic activity in a nation already familiar with the dangers of earthquakes.
Experts warn that such an earthquake could reach a magnitude of 8 to 9, potentially triggering enormous tsunamis, causing significant loss of life—potentially hundreds of thousands—and inflicting damage worth billions of dollars.
The assessment was updated by the Earthquake Research Committee, which adjusted the probability of a mega quake along the Nankai Trough to between 75 and 82%, up from a previous estimate of 74-81%. This undersea trench, spanning approximately 800 kilometers along Japan’s Pacific coast, is where the Philippine Sea tectonic plate is slowly slipping beneath the continental plate that supports Japan.
As these tectonic plates become stuck over time, they accumulate significant energy, which, when finally released, can result in massive earthquakes. Historical records indicate that megaquakes along the Nankai Trough have occurred every 100 to 200 years over the past 1,400 years, with the last significant event recorded in 1946.
An official from the secretariat of the Earthquake Research Committee expressed concern, stating, “It has been 79 years since the last quake, and the likelihood of another occurring is escalating each year, increasing by about 1 percent.”
Furthermore, government projections from 2012 suggest that smaller islands located off the main coasts could experience tsunami waves exceeding 30 meters in height if such a disaster occurs. Critical areas on Japan’s main islands of Honshu and Shikoku could face these monstrous waves within mere minutes.
In an unprecedented move last August, the Japan Meteorological Association (JMA) issued its first mega quake advisory, a precautionary response developed after the tragic Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in 2011. Following a 7.1 magnitude quake that resulted in injuries to 15 individuals, the JMA raised concerns regarding the likelihood of significant seismic activity in the Nankai Trough, although the advisory was lifted after one week. Still, the announcement led to panic buying and shortages of essential supplies like rice, as residents hurried to stock up on emergency items.
Historically, the Nankai Trough has a track record of producing powerful earthquakes. The catastrophic event of 1707 saw all segments of the trench rupture simultaneously, resulting in Japan’s second-most powerful earthquake on record. This cataclysmic quake was not only devastating in its own right but also triggered the last eruption of Mount Fuji. Subsequent major megathrusts occurred in 1854, as well as in 1944 and 1946, further demonstrating the region's seismic volatility.
As Japan braces for the inevitable, experts urge citizens to prepare for emergencies and be aware of the growing seismic threat that looms over the nation. Stay informed and ready, as the earth beneath our feet may soon reveal its might once again. Will you be ready when the ground shakes?
