SINGAPORE – An Artistic Milestone

In a groundbreaking event for Singapore’s art community, acclaimed Chinese multidisciplinary artist Liu Bolin, renowned as "The Invisible Man," pulled off a stunning display titled “disappearing acts” at two of Singapore’s iconic national monuments, engaging 68 participants, including himself.

Artistic Expression Through Performance

Over the course of January 17 and 18, Liu orchestrated dramatic performances on the steps of former City Hall, now the National Gallery Singapore. He further extended his unique art form to The Clifford Pier at The Fullerton Bay Hotel, capturing the essence of Singapore’s transformation from a colonial trading hub into a vibrant global metropolis.

Themes of Invisibility and Identity

Using painted camouflage to blend seamlessly into his surroundings, Liu’s performances symbolize deeper themes of invisibility, identity, and individual contributions in a collective society. These acts echo the artist’s earlier inspirations from the 9th Singapore International Photography Festival 2024, where he captivated audiences by merging with scenic backdrops at Merlion Park and Chinatown Complex Hawker Centre.

Reflections on Multiculturalism

Reflecting on his experiences in Singapore, Liu noted, “Singapore possesses a unique multicultural environment, allowing individuals from diverse backgrounds to coexist harmoniously, unlike many other cosmopolitan cities that grapple with social issues.” His new series of artworks, titled "We Are The World," invites participants from various cultures and faiths to explore questions about humanity’s ability to live together peacefully.

A Message of Unity

In a poignant message, Liu expressed hope for a world where love and unity prevail: “We are all part of a bigger body; you are a part of me, and I am also part of you. Our goal shouldn’t just be transcending differences but ending conflicts and fostering understanding across cultures.”

Community Involvement

The culminated artwork from the City Hall performances is composed of compelling photographs that encapsulate the contributions of 60 participants, including Liu. Participants ranged from Singapore permanent resident Nicolas Delsalle-Mun, who embraced the opportunity due to his admiration for Liu’s work, to 21-year-old local artist Diamond Nabilah Misson, who highlighted the inspirational and collaborative nature of the experience.

Historical Ties to The Clifford Pier

At The Clifford Pier, Liu's team included former boatmen of the pier, staff from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, and various community members. Among them, the oldest participant, 75-year-old Mr. Goh Chwee Leng, shared fond recollections of his past as a boatman and embraced this unique artistic opportunity.

Personal Connections to Art

Arts Nominated MP Usha Chandradas, who participated with her husband, shared her nostalgic memories associated with Clifford Pier, tying personal history with the artistic endeavor. Similarly, Captain Henry Sng expressed gratitude for the chance to honor Singapore’s maritime heritage through art.

Liu Bolin's Global Recognition

Liu Bolin’s international acclaim stems from his innovative self-portraits that involve intricate hand-painted camouflage in settings varying from the Great Wall of China to Rome’s Colosseum. Over the past two decades, he has acted as a living canvas in more than 20 countries, blending art with social commentary.

Significance of Community Art

This unprecedented act of community art in Singapore was facilitated by the arts charity organization Deck, in collaboration with Liu Bolin Studio, successfully bringing together Singaporeans from disparate backgrounds and generations, including visitors drawn to the project from afar.

Challenges and Collaborations

Co-founder of Deck, Gwen Lee, remarked on the challenges of coordinating such a large-scale public art event and the significance of selecting accessible locations that resonate with diverse communities. The project was supported by notable cultural partners, including The Fullerton Hotel and National Gallery Singapore.
