Strange Color Change in Singapore Canal Raises Eyebrows

SINGAPORE – A shocking change in the color of the water in a canal at Yishun Close has sparked an investigation by the National Environment Agency (NEA). Residents were taken aback when they noticed the vivid green hue, leading to concerns about potential pollution.

Local MP Jackson Lam reported that as of August 26, he had communicated with the NEA following numerous complaints from residents. He shared alarming photos on Facebook, highlighting the striking transformation of the canal.

Interestingly, Facebook user Yvonne Lim revealed that just days earlier, on August 16, the same stretch of water appeared a vibrant blue. This dramatic shift has left many puzzled and speculating on the causes.

NEA Takes Action: Tracking Down the Source

According to Mr. Lam, agency officers have initiated an investigation, utilizing surveillance and inspections to trace the source of the alarming discolouration. While the situation is still developing, he reassured residents that they are actively looking into it.

In a bid to maintain cleanliness in Singapore's waterways, Lam encouraged residents to report any unusual occurrences through the OneService app.

A History of Strange Water Colors in Singapore

This isn’t the first time Singapore's canals have exhibited strange colors. Earlier this year, a canal in Tengah turned brown, a phenomenon attributed to accumulated silt being stirred up by monsoon rains.

In 2024, a canal near Newton caught public attention when it turned an astonishing baby blue. Fortunately, the national water agency, PUB, confirmed that water quality downstream remained within safe parameters.

As the NEA continues its investigation into the mysterious green water, the community waits with bated breath for answers and reassurances about the health of their environment.
