SINGAPORE – As the political landscape heats up in Sengkang, the People’s Action Party (PAP) is gearing up for a tough fight against the Workers' Party (WP) in the upcoming elections, hinted former senior minister of state, Lam Pin Min.

"We recognize that every election will be a challenge, and it’s not just Sengkang facing the heat—each Group Representation Constituency (GRC) and Single Member Constituency (SMC) will demand our utmost effort," Lam expressed on April 20 during a walkabout at Compassvale’s Kopitiam Square.

Lam, who remains the only familiar face from the PAP’s 2020 team, acknowledged the uphill battle against an advantageous opposition, especially given WP chief Pritam Singh’s assertion that the forthcoming contest in Sengkang will be formidable. In the last elections, the WP narrowly clinched victory with 52.12% of the votes, edging past a PAP team that included high-profile figures.

This time around, Lam will be leading a fresh lineup for the PAP, including promising newcomers such as Theodora Lai, co-founder of Moringa Ventures, communications academic Elmie Nekmat, and local F&B director Bernadette Giam. Despite their inexperience in politics, Lam believes their youthful perspectives can resonate with local voters.

"While we face unique challenges as challengers without the backup of a town council, our team’s fresh approach and deep-rooted dedication to the community give us hope," said Lam. He asserted that they aim to regain the trust and support of Sengkang’s constituents.

The PAP team has been actively engaging with residents, keen on addressing local concerns such as creating more elderly-friendly infrastructure and fostering opportunities for youth. Lam aims to leverage his past experience as chairman of Ang Mo Kio Town Council to tackle municipal issues effectively.

In contrast, Pritam Singh refuted Lam’s claim of being disadvantaged by lacking town council support, emphasizing the grassroots connections the PAP still maintains. The political climate in Sengkang is charged, with both parties preparing for an exhilarating contest.

As the elections approach, all eyes will be on Sengkang, where the battle is set to not just reflect local sentiments but also influence the larger political narrative across Singapore.
