Lily McGarry, a determined 24-year-old medical student and triathlete from Jersey, is bravely preparing to embrace life without her limbs after a severe battle with sepsis.

From Freshers' Flu to the ICU

Initially mistaking her symptoms for a typical case of "freshers' flu," Lily was caught off guard when her condition rapidly declined. After a visit to the hospital, she suffered two heart attacks and fell into a coma, leaving a blank space in her memory for three harrowing months.

Sepsis, a potentially fatal condition that occurs when the body's response to infection causes widespread tissue damage, can affect anyone, regardless of age. As Lily reflects on her ordeal, she wishes she had paid more attention to her health.

A Life Shattered But Not Over

While lying in a hospital bed, Lily reminisces about her vibrant life as a passionate sportswoman who loved swimming, running, and soaking up the sun. The stark contrast between her former active lifestyle and her current reality challenges her to envision her future.

With little memory of the events that transpired, she later learned of her cardiac arrests and the severity of her meningococcal septicaemia from her family's updates.

Sepsis can manifest differently in each individual, and recognizing the symptoms is crucial for timely treatment. Key indicators include confusion, intense pain, diminished urine output, breathlessness, a feeling of impending doom, and abnormal skin coloring.
