Incredible Discovery: New Ankylosaurid Dinosaur Unveiled in Southern China!

In an astounding revelation for the world of paleontology, scientists have identified a new genus and species of ankylosaurid dinosaur from a well-preserved fossil discovered back in 1986 in southern China. This exciting find shines a light on the rich history of these fascinating armored dinosaurs.

Named Huaxiazhoulong shouwen, this ancient creature measured approximately 6 meters (20 feet) in length, marking it as a significant early member of the Ankylosauridae family, known for their distinctive protective armor. According to Ziheng Zhu, a paleontologist at Yunnan University and his research team, "Ankylosauria is a diverse clade of quadrupedal herbivorous dinosaurs characterized by parasagittal rows of osteoderms on the dorsolateral surface of the body and a heavily armored skull.”

Ankylosaurs roamed the Earth from the Middle Jurassic to the end of the Late Cretaceous epoch. This family is currently known to reside primarily in Asia and North America, with fossil records predominantly emerging from Mongolia and northern China. The remains of Huaxiazhoulong shouwen were uncovered in the Tangbian Formation, located in Longxi village, Jiangxi province. This geological region is rich in Late Cretaceous deposits, consisting largely of red mudstones, sandstones, and conglomerates, and has previously yielded other dinosaur fossils, including eggs.

Dating back between 84 and 72 million years ago, the fossilized remains consist of an articulated and partial skeleton, although the skull and mandible are unfortunately missing. Remarkably, Huaxiazhoulong shouwen becomes the second known ankylosaurid species to be discovered in Jiangxi province. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that this specimen is a basal member of the Ankylosauridae, underscoring its evolutionary significance.

This groundbreaking discovery contributes to the overall diversity of Late Cretaceous dinosaurs in China and offers crucial insights into the evolution of ankylosaurid dinosaurs across East Asia.

The findings have been formally published in the journal Historical Biology, amplifying interest in the study of dinosaurs and their peculiar adaptations over the course of millions of years.
