Imam Syed Hassan Receives Distinguished Honor for Promoting Interfaith Harmony in Singapore
In a heartfelt ceremony on November 3, Imam Syed Hassan Mohammad Al-Attas, affectionately known as Habib Hassan, was recognized for his outstanding contributions to interfaith harmony and social cohesion in Singapore. The event took place at ITE College Central in Ang Mo Kio, where he was presented with the prestigious Distinguished Service Order by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
As one of the nation’s longest-serving imams and the head of Ba'alwie Mosque in Bukit Timah, Habib Hassan has dedicated years to fostering understanding and appreciation of Singapore's multicultural landscape. His efforts have included hosting learning journeys for both local and international visitors at the mosque's interfaith museum, aimed at highlighting the rich tapestry of beliefs and traditions that coexist in the island nation.
In a touching tribute on social media, President Tharman shared insights into Habib Hassan's background, noting that he grew up in a diverse neighborhood where he learned the importance of mutual respect and understanding among different faiths. "One of the longest-serving imams in Singapore, Habib Hassan has been a pillar of strength in our inter-religious community," the President remarked.
Habib Hassan was one of six Singaporeans to receive the Distinguished Service Order this year, joining the ranks of notable figures including Ms. Jennie Chua, Mr. Hsieh Fu Hua, Mr. Peter Ong, Mr. Phillip Tan, and Mr. Teo Ming Kian. This award is one of the highest honors conferred during the National Awards Investiture.
In a year marked by significant recognitions, the Order of Nila Utama (with High Distinction) was awarded to Mr. Peter Ho, a retired top civil servant who has served Singapore for over 50 years, including leading key ministries such as Defence and Foreign Affairs.
Imam Syed Hassan's recognition not only highlights his personal achievements but also serves as an inspiration for continued unity and respect among Singapore's diverse communities, reinforcing the importance of dialogue and collaboration in promoting peace and understanding.
