Transformative Initiative: The Ball is Your Protection

In Casablanca, 25-year-old Marouane Abouzid has transformed his outlook on life after participating in “The Ball is Your Protection” program, a groundbreaking initiative by TIBU Africa in partnership with UNAIDS. This innovative program leverages the power of sports to address critical issues such as HIV awareness, gender equality, and gender-based violence.

Before joining the program, Marouane found himself largely uninformed about the realities of HIV and the concepts surrounding gender equality. However, he notes, “The training on HIV awareness led by UNAIDS and TIBU Africa was life-changing. It equipped me with essential skills like effective communication and active listening.” With these new tools, Marouane embraced the opportunity to engage his peers on topics that are often stigmatized or ignored.

Becoming a Change Ambassador

Now a proud change ambassador in his community, Marouane actively leads sports activities and educational sessions, becoming a source of inspiration for many. “I openly discuss what I’ve learned and encourage my friends to get tested for HIV while respecting the rights of others,” he reveals.

Culmination of Efforts

The “The Ball is Your Protection” project culminated in an inspiring closing ceremony, where Marouane led workshops and participated in sports activities alongside other enthusiastic young people. “Sports became a powerful medium for awareness and social mobilization,” he explains, noting how these events created safe environments for discussing critical issues without fear of judgment.

HIV Landscape in Morocco

In Morocco, around 23,000 individuals live with HIV, with nearly half of them being women. While the overall prevalence is relatively low, marginalized communities such as sex workers, men who have sex with men, and people who inject drugs face a higher risk. Reflecting on his journey, Marouane now realizes, “Previously, I thought HIV didn't impact those around me. Now, I understand that we all have a crucial role in this fight.”

Assia's Perspective

Joining Marouane on this important mission is Assia Ezzahraoui, 25, a participant in TIBU Africa’s Sports Vocational School program. She describes her experience with HIV awareness as profoundly enriching, saying, “It offered me new insights into symptoms, prevention methods, and treatment options.” For Assia, participation in this educational initiative has strengthened her resolve to prioritize her health and that of her community.
