How Sexism Undermines Team Performance: The Hidden Cost of Disruption

In a landscape where teamwork drives innovation, a groundbreaking study has unveiled a shocking truth: sexist behavior within teams cripples collaboration and affects everyone involved.

The research highlights that sexist remarks significantly disrupt emotional dynamics among women in collaborative settings. Emotional synchrony—the seamless alignment of expressions and emotions between team members—has long been regarded as a vital component for building trust and enhancing performance.

However, findings presented in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveal that in the face of sexism, this synchrony shifts from being a tool for performance to merely promoting social bonding. It appears to act as a defense mechanism instead.

"Sexism disrupts not just individuals but fundamentally alters team dynamics," asserts Prof. Ilanit Gordon of Bar-Ilan University and Yale University. "Emotional alignment, which traditionally aids teamwork, loses its effectiveness when teams are subjected to sexist comments."

Gordon partnered with a team of researchers, including Ph.D. student Alon Burns and professors Sharon Toker and Yair Berson, to explore this phenomenon. Their study engaged 177 all-women pairs who collaborated via video conferencing.

Participants were divided into two groups: one receiving subtle sexist remarks and the other remaining in a neutral environment. Advanced facial recognition technology monitored their emotional expressions during tasks.

The results were eye-opening: while emotional synchrony boosted performance in the control group, it failed to do so under sexist conditions. Interestingly, while emotional connections increased within the sexist group—indicating a heightened sense of social bonding—they did not yield any tangible performance improvements.

This suggests that in the presence of sexist threats, emotional synchrony is redirected towards coping strategies rather than effective collaboration. Gordon expresses concern that this diversion can diminish a team's focus on collective objectives.

Ultimately, the implications are profound: fostering a safe and respectful environment for women is not only ethically necessary but strategically crucial. The researchers advocate for robust zero-tolerance policies against sexual harassment as essential for preserving the effectiveness of teamwork.
