Hong Kong Faces Alarming Dual Virus Threat as Flu Season Begins: Are You at Risk?
As the flu season unfolds in Hong Kong, health authorities have issued urgent warnings about the rising threat posed by respiratory viruses, particularly respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). On January 9, 2025, the Department of Health alerted the public to increased risks of virus transmission due to cooler temperatures and the influx of returning travelers from various regions.
Medical experts emphasize that the flu and RSV may peak simultaneously this season, posing a significant risk of dual infections. The concerning statistic is that when individuals are co-infected with both viruses, the mortality rate can triple. Vulnerable populations, especially the elderly, are at the greatest risk, with recent studies indicating that hospital death rates from RSV infections can be up to 100 times higher compared to younger demographics.
Renowned respiratory specialist Dr. Angus Lo pointed out that although RSV is commonly associated with children, with nearly half of pediatric pneumonia cases attributed to this virus, the implications for the elderly are dire. Research highlights that 80 to 90 percent of children under two years old have been exposed to RSV, leading to symptoms such as fever, runny nose, and cough. While healthy young children usually recover in one to two weeks, older adults and individuals with chronic health conditions face substantially heightened risks.
Typically, RSV infections occur throughout the year, but they surge from late February to late September. Dr. Lo referenced last year’s data suggesting that a spike in RSV cases could follow the Lunar New Year holidays, raising concerns for public health officials. The intersection of these viral outbreaks could double the risk of flu for those already grappling with RSV, heightening the chances of severe illness and even death.
For the elderly, particularly those suffering from conditions such as diabetes or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, RSV can worsen their health dramatically. Close to 90 percent of hospitalized RSV patients come from high-risk groups, with mortality rates remaining critically elevated among older adults.
In response to these threats, health officials are urging high-risk individuals, especially seniors and those with pre-existing conditions, to remain vigilant during the festive season. Thankfully, there are vaccines available for RSV, including bivalent and adjuvanted variants, boasting an impressive effectiveness rate of up to 94 percent in preventing severe cases within the first year of administration. These vaccines can be delivered simultaneously with COVID-19, flu, and pneumonia vaccines, but currently, they are not approved for children. The price of vaccination is estimated between HK$2,000 to HK$3,000.
With the flu season upon us and health risks intensifying, now is the time to protect yourself and your loved ones. Are you prepared to face this dual virus threat? Don’t wait until it’s too late!
