Historic Milestone: Varda's W-2 Capsule Successfully Launches to Orbit with SpaceX

In a groundbreaking achievement for both Varda Space Industries and the Australian space sector, the company has announced the successful launch of its second orbital processing spacecraft, W-2. The spacecraft embarked on its journey aboard SpaceX's Transporter-12 rideshare mission, lifting off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on January 15, 2025.

This launch is particularly significant as it marks Australia's first commercial spacecraft re-entry, solidifying the nation’s role in the commercial space industry. After spending several weeks in orbit, the W-2 capsule is set to re-enter the atmosphere and land at the Koonibba Test Range in South Australia, a critical milestone for the country’s advancements in space exploration.

Southern Launch, managing all the necessary Australian approvals, has played a vital role in this mission, offering extensive technical support for the re-entry and recovery operations. The ability for a domestic spacecraft to return to Earth was officially authorized by the Australian Government in October 2024 under a revised Space (Launches and Returns) Act, paving the way for this historic mission.
