SINGAPORE – After a courageous mission in the wake of Myanmar’s devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake on March 28, the Operation Lionheart team from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) has returned home.

The resilient 80-member contingent, alongside personnel from the Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX) and Klass Engineering, landed at Changi Airport Terminal 3 around 4 PM on April 8 to a warm welcome from government officials, including Minister for Law and Home Affairs K. Shanmugam.

Expressing gratitude, Mr. Shanmugam highlighted the personal sacrifices made by the team, especially recognizing the 13 operationally ready national servicemen in the group — marking the largest number of NSmen in such operations to date.

“Despite the risks posed by aftershocks and the challenging terrain, you bravely ventured into danger to aid those in need,” he praised, emphasizing the team’s significant contribution with a successful life-saving operation amidst chaotic conditions.

Emotional Scenes at the Airport

Among the emotional scenes at the airport were family members eagerly awaiting the return of their loved ones. Ms. Nurfatin Zaini brought her children—ages nine, seven, and four—who created colorful banners to welcome their father, NSman Nasharudin Abu Bakar.

The family faced a tough week, as communication proved difficult. “They were distressed and wanted to fly to Myanmar to find him,” she shared, reflecting on the emotional strain of being apart during the festive Hari Raya Puasa season.

A Joyful Return

Captain Nasharudin expressed joy at returning home, stating, “This was the first time I was away from my family for Hari Raya since getting married.” The family eagerly looked forward to reconnecting and continuing their festive traditions together.

Rescue Operations in Naypyitaw

During their 10-day mission in Naypyitaw, the stricken capital, the SCDF team worked tirelessly alongside advanced technology, such as cyborg cockroaches utilized for search-and-rescue operations in heavily impacted areas.

Colonel Tay Zhi Wei, team leader, noted that while the active search-and-rescue phase concluded roughly six days after their arrival, the team's efforts didn’t stop there.

They transitioned to body recovery operations and established a medical clinic that served over 130 earthquake victims suffering various injuries.

Aftermath of the Earthquake

With tragic consequences following the earthquake, over 3,400 lives have been lost, and 4,600 injuries reported, with more than 17 million individuals affected according to the United Nations.

International recovery efforts are ongoing, and additional medical teams have arrived to further assist.

Conclusion

As Singapore reflects on its humanitarian response, the resilience and dedication demonstrated by the SCDF and HTX teams inspire hope amidst the tragedy, showcasing the importance of global cooperation during crises.
