On the evening of August 24, a swift-thinking kayak fisherman was in the right spot at the right time and ended up playing the role of a hero, saving several stand-up paddleboarders who had gone off course near the popular Changi Boardwalk.
The fisherman, known on social media as Stomper Kenji, shared a gripping YouTube video capturing the dramatic incident, emphasizing the importance of water safety. As he and his companion, Cruz, were paddling back to the mainland, they heard alarming cries for help.
"I saw a group of SUP users in distress," Kenji recalled. The group had been struggling against strong currents and winds, which had left them exhausted and disoriented.
When Kenji approached the paddlers, one woman urgently expressed, "No, we're not okay. We're asking for rescue." Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Kenji and Cruz began to assist. A nearby boat was trying to help, but the difficult navigation through the Changi Boardwalk, with its narrow channels and sharp barnacles, complicated the rescue efforts.
Fortunately, after a careful operation, they were able to help get most of the SUP users onboard the boat safely, but it soon became apparent that three individuals remained unaccounted for. As night fell, Kenji and Cruz knew that locating the drifting paddlers without adequate lighting would be extremely challenging.
In a stroke of luck, while escorting the boat back to shore, they spotted one of the missing paddlers adrift. "We gave him water to hydrate and towed him back to Ohana," explained Kenji, referring to the cozy Ohana Beach House in Changi where many locals gather.
On their way to safety, they met Kelvin, the owner of Ohana, who confirmed that other paddlers had made it back safely, with only the person they were towing remaining in their care. Ultimately, they successfully brought him back to shore, and as a fitting reward for their efforts, Kenji and Cruz celebrated the rescue with a refreshing beer at Ohana.
This incident serves as a crucial reminder for all water enthusiasts: safety should always come first! Here are a few essential precautions to consider before heading out on the water:
1. Check Weather Conditions:
Always be aware of the local weather forecast and tide schedules.
2. Stay Hydrated:
Bring enough water for everyone to avoid dehydration during your adventure.
3. Use Appropriate Safety Gear:
Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) and ensure your equipment is in good condition.
4. Have a Communication Plan:
Be sure to have a means of communication with someone onshore in case of emergencies.
If you're planning a day on the water, keep these tips in mind, as the unexpected can happen to anyone!
