Veteran actor and radio DJ Marcus Chin, aged 71, faced life-threatening challenges after suffering a heart attack in October. He was immediately admitted to the National University Hospital, where medical professionals performed two coronary stenting procedures to save his life.
Despite this harrowing experience, Marcus refused to let his health issues sideline him. Remarkably, he was back to hosting live streams less than a week post-attack, showing resilience that stunned fans. In an impressive comeback, he resumed his radio hosting duties at Love 972 just three days before his medical leave officially concluded.
During a recent episode of '#JustSwipeLah,' host Das DD shadowed Marcus on his return to the Mediacorp building, where his co-host Dennis Chew shared that over 440 messages of support flooded in from listeners, highlighting the affection and worries of his fanbase.
Chew, who was abroad during the heart attack, rushed back to Singapore upon learning about the incident. He poignantly remarked, “Marcus is like a father and older brother to me,” illustrating the deep bond they share.
In an interview, Marcus expressed boredom during his medical leave, finding it "harder to be cooped up at home." He shared his relief over quickly recovering, stating he spent only three days in the hospital following the first procedure, and remarkably was discharged just six hours after the second.
While Marcus successfully navigated these recent challenges, he plans to take a step back from acting for at least the next year. During his recuperation, he cherished the time spent with his girlfriend, May, who was by his side during this tumultuous period.
Revisiting the day of his heart attack, Marcus recounted feelings of intense fear, describing how he found himself clutching the arm of fellow actor Mark Lee, silently pleading for help. In a heartbreaking moment, he indicated he wasn’t sure if he'd survive the ordeal while being wheeled into the operating theatre, noting May’s presence and how it felt like a last goodbye.
“I said three words to her. It might have been my last time seeing her,” he recalled, tears filling his eyes. “I'm very lucky to survive this calamity.”
Regarding retirement, which many speculate about, Marcus revealed he has financial goals to meet before considering that step. “In Singapore, if you want to retire comfortably, you need to have one million dollars. I’m working towards that goal,” he explained, expressing hopes to secure this before he turns 75.
Marcus also talked about the importance of taking life slower and emphasized the need for regular health check-ups, especially for heart health—a lesson he learned the hard way. He expressed overwhelming gratitude for the support he received during his recovery, particularly focusing on his girlfriend May.
To May, he said, “I hope everyone can be healthy. Especially you. If you are not healthy, how can you take care of me? So let’s both stay healthy together." His message not only reflects his appreciation for her care but also underscores the deep connections we cherish during life’s trying moments.
As Marcus navigates his recovery and future endeavors, fans eagerly await his next show, inspired by his resilience and heartfelt journey through fear, love, and survival.
