The Study That Could Change Everything
Published in *Frontiers in Human Neuroscience*, the randomized clinical trial, titled "SMART Accelerates Rate of Cognitive Gains in Service Members with mTBI and PTSD," studied 148 active-duty service members. The researchers explored the effectiveness of two distinct cognitive rehabilitation methods: the Strategic Memory Advanced Reasoning Tactics (SMART) and the Study of Cognitive Rehabilitation Effectiveness (SCORE).
Two Approaches, One Goal: Enhanced Cognitive Performance
SMART training focuses on a "top-down" strategy, emphasizing techniques that enhance self-agency and flexible thinking, applicable in various life situations. Over just 20 hours, this proprietary methodology equips participants with science-backed strategies that optimize brain function, sharpen mental energy, and foster innovative thinking.
In contrast, the SCORE training adopts a "bottom-up" approach, extending over 60 hours. This method trains foundational skills aimed at improving attention, planning, and memory through computer-based Attention Processing Training (APT-3).
Remarkable Results in Record Time
Both methods led to significant cognitive improvements, but SMART training stood out by achieving results in only one-third of the time. This suggests it may allow service members to regain cognitive function more quickly, which is vital for carrying out complex military tasks.

Erin Venza, lead author and clinical operations head at the Center for BrainHealth, explained, "Top-down SMART brain training is about exercising the executive networks, which serve as the brain's CEO. Cognitive strategies that enhance strategic thinking and problem-solving empower individuals to flourish, even amid adversity."

Jennifer Zientz, the director of programs at the Center for BrainHealth, emphasized the urgency of these findings: "SMART brain training can help service members return to mission readiness faster, which is essential for our warriors.
