In a thrilling breakthrough for botany enthusiasts, researchers have identified a brand-new species within the globally diverse Saussurea genus, known as Saussurea degeensis. This genus, part of the Asteraceae family, boasts around 520 species that thrive across the Northern Hemisphere, each showcasing stunning variations in morphology and habitat preferences.

Published in the journal *Phytotaxa*, this discovery comes from a dedicated team at the South China Botanical Garden under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Their research focused on the complex Saussurea subgenus, Amphilaena, revealing surprising connections among several specimens previously thought to belong to the same species, S. nigrescens.

A Deep Dive into DNA

Through rigorous molecular analysis of 54 samples across four subgenera of Saussurea—utilizing 800 nuclear loci—the researchers pinpointed the new species as part of the Amphilaena subgenus. It stands in close relation to well-known species like S. acutisquama and S. superba.

Saussurea degeensis dazzles with unique characteristics, including vibrant purple bracts and simple inflorescences. While it shares similarities with its counterpart S. nigrescens, it can be distinguished by its larger, crisp-edged leaves and a more prolific number of bracts, setting it apart in the lush landscapes it inhabits.

This stunning new species thrives along the borders of the Hengduan Mountains and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau—an environment distinct from that of S. nigrescens, which is found further south in the southeastern Hengduan Mountains.
