"We named this galaxy Zhūlóng after the powerful red solar dragon in Chinese mythology. Zhūlóng symbolizes cosmic time and the cycle of day and night, which makes it the perfect name for such a magnificent discovery," stated team leader Mengyuan Xiao from the University of Geneva. This cosmic dragon not only mirrors the Milky Way in its shape and stellar mass but also exhibits a disk size of approximately 60,000 light-years.

With an estimated stellar mass of 100 billion times that of our Sun, Zhūlóng's disk is slightly smaller than that of the Milky Way, which extends about 100,000 light-years across and holds around 46 billion solar masses. Zhūlóng was discovered as part of the JWST's ANORAMIC survey, a comprehensive extragalactic initiative led by Christina Williams and Oesch from UNIGE. Using a special observation mode known as "pure parallel," the $10 billion telescope was able to capture high-quality images of Zhūlóng while simultaneously gathering data from other cosmic targets.
