SINGAPORE – Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has officially initiated the construction of Changi Airport Terminal 5 (T5), a monumental expansion that has been over a decade in the making. This ambitious project aims to tap into the anticipated surge in air travel across the Asia-Pacific and beyond.

A New Era for Singapore Airlines

With the groundbreaking on May 14, the mega terminal is set to consolidate operations for Singapore Airlines (SIA) and its low-cost counterpart, Scoot, all under one roof when T5 opens in the mid-2030s. Currently spread across Terminals 1, 2, and 3, this move will pave the way for enhanced operational synergies and future growth.

Doubling Capacity: The Future of Air Travel

Designed to accommodate around 50 million passengers annually, T5 will effectively double the size of Changi Airport, increasing its capacity from 90 million to a staggering 140 million yearly. This strategic expansion is set against the backdrop of a projected doubling of passenger traffic within the Asia-Pacific by the 2040s.

With T5, the airport aims to expand its reach to over 200 city links by the mid-2030s.

Plans include automated baggage handling systems, AI tools for flight operation optimization, and eco-friendly features such as extensive solar panels aimed at reducing the airport's carbon footprint.

Seamless Passenger Experience Guaranteed

Passengers at T5 can look forward to a streamlined experience with advanced transport systems, including automated people-movers and shorter security checks situated conveniently near boarding gates. Transfer passengers can expect to connect with their next flights in under an hour, creating a faster experience than current standards.

The project also includes plans for sea connectivity, potentially facilitating seamless air-sea transfers at nearby Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. Furthermore, T5 will be built to withstand the impacts of climate change, featuring elevated airfields and a comprehensive stormwater management system.

Financial Backbone and Future Growth

Launched in 2015, the Changi Airport Development Fund has already seen a significant investment of $11 billion to support this expansion. Although the total cost of T5 remains unreported, it's speculated to be in the tens of billions.
