Grab’s Groundbreaking Initiative

In a bold move towards embracing technology, Grab has launched an autonomous shuttle bus to transport its employees between the company’s One-North office and the MRT station. Starting from July 9, this innovative electric shuttle aims to enhance convenience during off-peak hours.

A High-Tech Commute Experience

The 22-seater shuttle will run daily from 2 PM to 4 PM, allowing employees to track their ride via the Grab app. While the shuttle operates autonomously, a trained safety driver will always be onboard, ensuring the safety and smooth operation of each journey.

Collaborating for the Future

This initiative is in partnership with Autonomous A2Z, a leading Korean manufacturer specializing in autonomous vehicles. Ryan Kim, A2Z’s director, highlighted that this collaboration, alongside efforts from the Land Transport Authority and local safety drivers, is crucial for successfully integrating AV operations within Singapore.

Addressing Key Transportation Challenges

The pilot program not only aims to test the commercial viability of autonomous shuttles but also seeks solutions to the ongoing first- and last-mile commuting challenges. Moreover, there's potential to mitigate manpower shortages in public transport, a pressing issue in urban areas.

A Step Towards a Smarter Future

Singapore is already gearing up for larger trials of autonomous vehicles in neighborhoods like Punggol later this year. Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow has confirmed that AVs will navigate fixed routes, marking a significant step in the nation’s transportation evolution.

Rigorous Training for Safety

Prior to its debut, Grab’s autonomous shuttle underwent an extensive 100-hour training on a fixed 3.9km route connecting the office to One-North station. This included gathering data on lane markings, traffic signals, and even potential real-world obstacles such as unexpected traffic.

Safety Comes First

Equipped with 11 sensors providing a comprehensive 360-degree view, the bus has been designed with a safety-first mindset. Should the system detect any issues, it is programmed to come to a complete stop, ensuring the safety of its passengers.

Future Prospects and Training

In addition to its regular operation hours, the shuttle will undergo further training sessions. Grab and A2Z will meticulously evaluate safety and performance outcomes, potentially expanding operations based on initial results.

A Demonstration of Caution and Reliability

During a recent demonstration, the shuttle showcased its cautious driving capabilities, stopping at zebra crossings even without pedestrians nearby and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles. Screens inside the bus provide real-time information on its operational modes, speed, and estimated arrival times.

Upskilling for the Future

Grab is also dedicated to exploring new job opportunities within the AV sector for its workforce. The company plans to train up to 10 safety drivers by year-end, with five currently in training. Yee Wee Tang, Grab’s regional head of operations, emphasized the importance of safety and job creation through this groundbreaking initiative.
