Overview

SINGAPORE – Brace yourselves, Singaporeans! Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has promised an increase in support for citizens, set to be revealed with the upcoming Budget announcement in February.

Addressing Cost of Living Concerns

During a recent visit to Jalan Besar GRC on January 4, PM Wong acknowledged the rising concerns among citizens about the escalating cost of living. He assured everyone that the government is actively addressing these challenges.

Just the day before, on January 3, every Singaporean household received $300 worth of Community Development Council (CDC) vouchers—an initial gesture that Wong hopes will kickstart the year on a positive note. "This will help you as you prepare for the year ahead," he commented.

Commitment to Additional Support

Wong further emphasized the government’s commitment to develop additional schemes and programs to address daily concerns, saying, “We will continue to look at schemes and programmes and ways in which we can provide more support for Singaporeans, especially concerning the cost of living.”

Reflecting on SG60

With 2025 marking Singapore's 60th anniversary of independence, referred to as SG60, PM Wong highlighted the importance of reflecting on the nation's progress, crediting the collective efforts of citizens, especially the Pioneer and Merdeka generations. “SG60 is not just a time for celebration; it’s a moment to reflect on our journey as a nation and envision our future together,” he stated.

Community Engagement Initiatives

Since taking office in May 2024, PM Wong has been actively engaging with various constituencies, making this his first visit in 2025. He participated in the "SG60 Build with Love" initiative at Kreta Ayer Square, which aims to support 1,000 underprivileged households in the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng area by providing them with specially curated gift boxes for SG60.

In a heartwarming display of community spirit, PM Wong collaborated with around 60 residents to create the largest map of Singapore using the SG60 gift boxes. This initiative, organized by local grassroots organizations, strives to promote unity and care within the community.

The thoughtful packages include essential items like a customized SG60 cushion, towels, and insect repellant, made possible through the generosity of corporate partners and donors. Young participants, including pre-schoolers like five-year-old Timaeus Eliran, contributed by crafting message cards expressing good wishes for the recipients.

Community Sentiment

Most touching was the sentiment shared by Timaeus's father, Manivannan Jayasilan. He hopes his son understands the evolution of Singapore and cherishes the peace residents enjoy. "In many parts of the world, there’s a lot of trouble. We must sustain peace in Singapore,” he remarked.

Mrs. Josephine Teo, Minister for Digital Development and Information, reinforced the significance of caring within the community, asserting that this initiative exemplifies the spirit of "together we grow."

Longtime Kreta Ayer resident and retiree, Quek Tiong Swee, expressed his joy seeing the youth participating actively in community-building efforts. “It’s heart-warming to see the younger generation joining hands with us to celebrate Singapore’s 60th anniversary.”

Community Engagement after the Event

After the event, PM Wong mingled with the community in Chinatown Complex, sharing smiles and taking pictures with delighted diners and shoppers. He even joined in a lively Chinese New Year lohei session to usher in the festivities.

Expansion of Elderly Care Services

Wong also visited the PCF Sparkle Care @ Kreta Ayer eldercare service center, which is set to double its capacity from 45 to 85 daycare spots by October. This expansion will introduce new features such as a reading corner and specialized dementia care services.

Elderly attendee Madam Yong Chew Hing, 85, who participated in a creative art project with the PM, shared her desire to stay active and social amidst fears of dementia, emphasizing the importance of community engagement.

Looking Ahead to SG60 Budget Announcement

Exciting plans are in motion, and as the nation gears up for SG60, it’s clear that the government is committed to building a more supportive, inclusive future for all Singaporeans. Mark your calendars—the Budget announcement is expected to bring more good news!
