Exciting Changes for Motorcyclists!

Starting November 1, Singapore is set to revolutionize the motorcycle riding experience with a wider selection of approved helmets at potentially lower prices! Thanks to updated regulations, riders can look forward to more affordable safety gear that meets global standards.

International Standards, Local Benefits!

The new requirements align with internationally recognized safety standards, meaning that helmets certified overseas can now be sold in Singapore without undergoing local approval processes. This will streamline the availability of safe, high-quality helmets.

Say Goodbye to Old Standards!

Currently, only one laboratory in Singapore is authorized to certify motorcycle helmets. However, the update brings in more accredited labs for faster helmet testing, making the approval process quicker and more efficient.

What’s New in Helmet Safety?

Singapore will recognize two revisions of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) safety standards: R22.05 and R22.06. Only helmets certified to the newer UNECE R22.06 can be sold without undergoing further testing.

Enhancing Protection on the Roads!

These new standards, already embraced in regions like the European Union, Japan, and South Korea, emphasize essential features such as rotational impact protection and high-speed impact absorption. This is a game-changer in enhancing rider safety.

Transition Period for Riders!

During a transition phase until November 2026, helmets certified under previous standards will still be accepted. However, riders should note that starting November 19, 2031, only helmets meeting the new standards will be available.

Important Helmet Care Tips!

Motorcyclists are not required to replace their old helmets immediately, but the Traffic Police recommend replacing them every five years to ensure optimum protection, as materials degrade over time.

Say Goodbye to Confusing Standards!

The last update was in 2014, and many importers faced challenges because older standards clashed with those recognized in places like Europe and the U.S. The previous requirements even led to destructive testing, which inflated costs and complicated helmet designs.

Convenience Meets Safety!

New helmet designs might now feature quick-release chin straps that are easier to use. While this convenience is welcome, it's essential for riders to ensure their helmets are securely fastened for maximum protection.

Looking Ahead!

This announcement comes nearly a year after plans for the safety standards update were hinted at during a major motorcycle event. Mr. Rex Tan, President of the Singapore Motorcycle Trade Association, is optimistic about the richer variety of helmets available and expects sellers to adjust pricing to reflect the new compliance cost.

Get Ready for the Helmet Revolution!

As Singapore steps into this new phase of motorcycle safety, riders can gear up for a more affordable, diverse selection of helmets that promise to enhance their riding experience!
