In a groundbreaking initiative, Singapore's Traffic Police are set to roll out a remarkable fleet of 19 high-performance electric vehicles (EVs) starting in the second half of 2025. This move marks a significant milestone as the Singapore Police Force becomes the first Home Team department to integrate EVs into their operational arsenal.

These state-of-the-art Polestar 2 EVs have been specifically modified for highway patrol duties, enhancing both performance and functionality. From a standstill, they can accelerate to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds—outpacing traditional models like the Volvo S80 and BMW 325d by over three seconds!

These electric patrol vehicles are not just about speed; they are designed to bolster police presence on the roads, provide assistance during accidents, and enforce traffic regulations effectively. Assistant Superintendent Sam Tai shared insights on these new features during a preview event held at the Traffic Police headquarters.

Dressed in striking white with orange and blue reflective markings, the Polestar 2 is equipped with advanced technology such as run-flat tyres, allowing it to travel up to 80 km even after a puncture—features not available in the standard models sold to the public. Modifications include a robust steel roof, an emergency light bar, and a digital message board to keep road users informed.

Next-Gen Tech for Enhanced Efficiency

The new vehicles come with smart technologies designed to improve the operational effectiveness of officers. For instance, they feature an automatic vehicle number plate recognition system that alerts officers to wanted vehicles through a bespoke digital screen. Moreover, real-time video streaming to the command center adds a layer of operational enhancement.

A Sustainable Shift in Law Enforcement

Senior Assistant Commissioner Daniel Tan emphasized that the deployment of these electric vehicles symbolizes a significant advancement in traffic enforcement capabilities and a commitment to sustainability. Significant Investment and Infrastructure Upgrade

Estimated at approximately $3.8 million, the contract for these patrol cars includes a comprehensive ten-year maintenance plan. To facilitate the transition, charging stations are being established at Traffic Police headquarters, ensuring that officers are well-equipped to handle their duties efficiently.
