Vivian Balakrishnan at the Helm Again

In a bold move ahead of the upcoming General Election 2025, Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan will once again spearhead the People’s Action Party (PAP) team in Holland-Bukit Timah Group Representation Constituency (GRC). This seasoned quartet includes Senior Minister of State Sim Ann, Deputy Speaker Christopher de Souza, and MP Edward Chia, all of whom successfully defeated the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) last election with an impressive 66.36% of the votes.

A Team with Proven Success

"We are a tried-and-tested team; our residents know us well," Balakrishnan asserted during the PAP team’s introduction at the scenic Pang Sua Pond performance stage. This four-member group has been actively engaging the community, listening to their dreams, concerns, and aspirations.

Community Roots Run Deep

Dr. Balakrishnan has been part of the Holland-Bukit Timah GRC since its inception in 2006, following his entry into politics in 2001 through the Holland-Bukit Panjang GRC. De Souza has also been with the team since 2006, while Sim joined in 2011. Edward Chia, representing the newer blood, first contested in 2020.

Redistricting Ahead of GE2025

The constituency has seen minor boundary shifts ahead of the elections, with two Choa Chu Kang HDB estates transferred out, while an area east of Upper Bukit Timah Road was moved in, increasing the electorate from 114,973 in 2020 to approximately 122,891 expected voters in 2025.

Engaging New Residents

Sim Ann emphasized her commitment to reaching out to new residents in the neighborhoods that have joined Holland-Bukit Timah. "I’ve already visited several condominiums and the Beauty World Centre, and I’m eager to deepen connections with the community there," she shared.

A Message to First-time Voters

Addressing first-time voters, Chia acknowledged their challenges, urging them to consider their families' futures when casting their votes. "Respect your choice, but also reflect on what we’ve accomplished as a party," he said. He reassured them of their commitment to listening and supporting their aspirations.

New Opposition on the Horizon?

As the political landscape heats up, the opposition party Red Dot United (RDU) has expressed its intent to contest the GRC but may yield to the SDP, which has previously fielded candidates there. RDU’s Ravi Philemon has not shied away from critiquing Dr. Balakrishnan regarding recent controversies, including the Ridout Road saga.

Dr. Balakrishnan Responds

In a spirited response, Balakrishnan acknowledged Philemon’s criticisms while emphasizing the importance of trust between them and the electorate. He maintains that his team is prepared to uphold its promises and advance Singapore’s future.

Conclusion: Trust and Responsibility

In this critical electoral period, Dr. Balakrishnan stands firm on his integrity, promising transparency and dedication to the constituents of Holland-Bukit Timah. He firmly believes in building a united, constructive dialogue within Singapore’s diverse society.
