During a rally, Mr. Ong invoked an analogy dating back to 2011, likening the opposition to a co-driver in a car, suggesting that if the opposition tries to steer while the ruling party drives, it could lead to a crash. He argued that a strong ruling party paired with a constructive opposition is a more effective balance.

Dr. Chee rebuked this analogy, stating that it misrepresents the essence of a constructive opposition. He expressed disappointment over Mr. Ong's assertions, emphasizing the importance of having an opposition that can responsibly challenge the government.

A Call for Change

Dr. Chee urged voters to elect a meaningful opposition capable of holding the government accountable, particularly on pressing issues like the rising cost of living and underemployment. He criticized superficial political engagement, advocating for genuine, continuous interaction between elected officials and constituents beyond just campaign season.

Tax Reform Proposals

In a bold proposal, Dr. Chee suggested exempting basic necessities from the Goods and Services Tax (GST), recommending a higher rate for luxury items to offset revenue losses. He noted that those who purchase luxury goods can still afford increased taxes, proposing a fairer approach to taxation.

Dr. Chee warned that without intervention, income disparity in Singapore is set to widen. He highlighted the risks such disparities pose to social stability, urging for more support for those earning lower wages.

Tackling Healthcare Criticism

Responding to Mr. Ong's skepticism regarding the SDP's healthcare plan, particularly the switch to a national health insurance system, Dr. Chee defended the proposal, arguing that the current system is overly complicated and hard to manage.
