Gaza’s Polio Vaccination Campaign Surpasses 90%; UNRWA Health Chief Hails ‘Miraculous’ Effort Amid Conflict

Gaza’s Polio Vaccination Campaign Surpasses 90%.

In an astonishing public health achievement, the polio vaccination rate in Gaza has reportedly surpassed 90%, according to Akihiro Seita, the Director of Health for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This major milestone follows an extensive vaccination campaign that took place between September 1 and September 13, 2024.

Seita praised the dedication and resilience of the Gazan people in the face of incredible adversity, as ongoing conflict posed significant challenges to the vaccination effort. 'We achieved this much thanks to the resilience of the people in Gaza amid the extraordinary circumstances of the ongoing war,' he stated in an interview with Japanese media.

Remarkably, a total of 559,161 children under the age of 10 were vaccinated during this period. Initially, the estimated target population was around 640,000, prompting UNRWA to reassess its figures to ensure that all eligible children have been reached.

To facilitate the vaccination drive, both Israel and the Hamas militant group temporarily halted hostilities in designated areas of Gaza. Seita highlighted the effort required to accomplish this, calling it 'practically a miracle' under the prevailing conditions.

The vaccination program requires two doses, with the second round scheduled to begin in mid-October. A significant concern arises if the ongoing conflict extends into that timeframe. Seita indicated that UNRWA would seek another pause in violence to ensure the smooth continuation of the vaccinations, emphasizing the critical need for a stable environment for health interventions.

In addition to the successful rollout, Seita advocated for an immediate ceasefire, stressing that 'vaccinations should not be done in such adverse conditions.' This call underscores the pressing need for both humanitarian access and a sustained effort to safeguard the health of the population in Gaza, particularly for its vulnerable children.

As the situation develops, public health officials and humanitarian organizations continue to monitor the impact of the conflict on health initiatives, with the hope that peace will pave the way for more effective health interventions that protect the lives and well-being of the people in Gaza.

The persistence of health challenges in conflict zones highlights the urgent international need for collaborative efforts in disease prevention and health promotion, especially in regions where children are the most affected.
