Independent Candidate Jeremy Tan Challenges Rivals Over Gambling Claims

In a bold move during the GE2025 campaign, independent candidate Jeremy Tan is shaking things up in Mountbatten SMC. Contrary to comments made by rival Gho Sze Kee of the People's Action Party (PAP), Tan argues that Bitcoin investments are not mere gambling, as Gho suggested at her recent rally.

"What is gambling? Firstly, there’s a Toto shop right next to FairPrice!" Tan exclaimed on May 1, challenging Gho to close down that branch if she truly stands against gambling.

A Heated Debate on Bitcoin Investments

Gho had pointedly dismissed Tan's proposals for government investment in Bitcoin, stating, "This is what I call gambling... The PAP does not believe in gambling." But Tan wasn't backing down. Drawing attention to Singapore's significant investment landscape, he highlighted Temasek's involvement in both a US$275 million write-down related to cryptocurrency giant FTX and a US$200 million funding round for Singapore's Amber Group.

Tan's Vision for Mountbatten SMC

At his inaugural rally held at Home of Athletics sports track, Tan emphasized the seriousness of managing town councils, equating it to running a business. "You’re my customers, and your trust is my currency," he stated, laying out his vision for Mountbatten.

His ambitious policies include reforming the way Housing Board flats are viewed as retirement assets and introducing a Singapore-dollar-denominated Bitcoin exchange-traded fund, aiming to bolster savings protection for citizens.

Challenging Experience Narratives

Gho, a maritime lawyer stepping into the political arena for the first time, is in a tight race against Tan. The former four-term MP, Lim Biow Chuan, previously questioned Tan’s qualifications, but the independent candidate shot back, pointing out that Gho, too, lacks hands-on experience in town council management.

Tan boasts up to 15 years of experience in entrepreneurship, emphasizing that he has gathered insights from various contractors and studied the dynamics of town council operations.

Tech-Savvy Solutions for Community Engagement

With a flair for technology, Tan plans to revamp the current town management software to enhance efficiency and accessibility. He envisions deploying artificial intelligence to help residents connect seamlessly with their community committees.

In a show of solidarity for independent candidates, Tan was joined by fellow candidate Darryl Lo, who is contesting Radin Mas SMC, for a brief meet-and-greet with supporters.

A Historic Moment for Independent Candidates

This election marks the first occasion since 2015 that an independent candidate has hosted a rally, with Tan emerging as the only independent hopeful to host one in GE2025. Will his daring strategies and fresh perspective resonate with the electorate? Only time will tell!
