Revolutionary Step in HPV Prevention
In a groundbreaking move, biopharma giant MSD has secured approval for its cutting-edge nine-valent HPV vaccine for males aged 16 to 26! This monumental decision from China's National Medical Products Administration marks Gardasil9 as the first and only HPV vaccine of its kind approved for both genders in the country, ushering in a new era of "gender-neutral prevention" against dangerous HPV-related cancers and diseases.
A Win for Men's Health
This latest approval follows January's green light for MSD's four-valent vaccine for males, making it the first vaccine for men approved in China. Now, eligible men across numerous cities can access these vital vaccination options at local healthcare facilities.
A Milestone in Vaccination History
Since the introduction of Gardasil9 in China back in 2018, the vaccine has successfully protected over 33 million women from the life-threatening risks associated with HPV. Covering an array of nine HPV types—6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58—this vaccine fortifies defenses against various HPV strains.
A Shared Responsibility for Health
Notably, HPV doesn't discriminate by gender. Men, having a lower natural clearance rate for HPV infections compared to women, are also at risk of developing serious conditions such as anal cancer and genital warts. Professor Qiao Youlin from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences emphasizes the significance of vaccinating both sexes to create herd immunity and combat HPV-related diseases effectively.
"With this new approval, we're poised to protect not just women, but men, families, and communities as a whole, paving the way for a future free from HPV-related health threats," said Anna Van Acker, MSD's senior vice president and president of MSD China.
