Fury Erupts as Disgraced Surgeon Ian Paterson Set for Open Prison Transfer

2024-09-28

In a shocking turn of events, notorious breast surgeon Ian Paterson is slated to be transferred to an open prison—a decision that has ignited outrage among his victims and their families.

Paterson, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2017 for performing unnecessary and harmful procedures on patients, is linked to the tragic deaths of over 60 women due to his malpractice.

Relatives of Paterson’s victims expressed their hurt and disillusionment at the announcement. One family member described the transfer as "a kick in the guts," while a liaison officer for victims highlighted that they were not properly notified, depriving them of the opportunity to voice their concerns regarding the move.

In response to the backlash, a spokesman for the Ministry of Justice extended an apology for the lack of communication and the distress it caused.

Shirley Maronie, whose sister Marie Pinfield tragically died after undergoing an operation performed by Paterson, voiced her devastation over the decision. Marie underwent surgery in 2006 to correct issues caused by Paterson’s previous work, which ultimately resulted in a delay in her cancer treatment and led to her death from secondary cancer in 2008.

An inquest into the deaths of more than 60 women who fell victim to Paterson’s practice is set to commence on October 7, heightening the emotions surrounding this heartbreaking case.

Maronie articulated her disbelief at the justice system’s leniency, stating, "If someone assaulted ten people in a pub, they wouldn't be afforded such a soft option. Yet, this manipulative surgeon is getting a fast pass to freedom."

"This is simply a scandal," she declared, vowing to take her protest to local officials and anyone who might help reverse the decision.

The liaison officer confirmed that they were not informed about Paterson’s potential transfer, emphasizing the need for better communication.

"Unfortunately, we were unaware of his consideration for an open prison, which would have allowed us time to submit our views," their statement said.

The spokesperson for the Ministry acknowledged the victims' feelings and conveyed that they had raised the matter with the prison authorities to ensure the victims' perspectives were duly considered.

As the inquest looms, the growing anger surrounding Paterson's impending release highlights the ongoing struggle for justice among the victims' families, who continue to seek accountability and truth in the face of devastating losses.

Families are left questioning how such a surgeon could ever be given the opportunity for a more relaxed prison environment after the lives he shattered.
