In an innovative move aimed at promoting sustainability, Singapore will turn empty aluminum cans into medals for the elite and masters' athletes participating in the highly anticipated World Aquatics Championships. This remarkable initiative, named "trash to treasure," was announced on March 10, marking a significant step towards hosting a greener sporting event.

The Ministry for Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) confirmed that an engagement event focusing on this eco-friendly effort will take place on Wednesday. The upcoming World Aquatics Championships, featuring thrilling competitions across swimming, water polo, diving, artistic swimming, open water swimming, and high diving, is set to run from July 11 to August 3.

By hosting this event, Singapore becomes the first Southeast Asian nation to take on the prestigious World Aquatics Championships, especially notable after the event was relocated from Kazan, Russia, due to geopolitical tensions arising from the invasion of Ukraine.

The championships will be situated in prime locations, with Sentosa Island and the Singapore Sports Hub in Kallang designated as the key venues. Additionally, some events will take advantage of a temporary facility erected in a car park adjacent to Leisure Park Kallang Mall, with an expected completion date by the end of May.

Economic experts anticipate that the affluence from international tourists attending both the World Aquatics Championships and the World Aquatics Masters Championships could generate an impressive S$60 million (approximately US$44.7 million) in revenue, welcoming around 40,000 visitors from abroad throughout the month-long extravaganza.

This commitment to sustainability not only champions environmental consciousness but also sets a new precedent for future sporting events, showcasing how athletic competitions can contribute to eco-friendly practices. Will this innovative approach inspire other major events to adopt green initiatives? Only time will tell!
