A Scary Diagnosis Transformed into Strength

Eliza Fok, the dynamic chairperson of the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation, reflects on a life-altering moment 22 years ago when she received her breast cancer diagnosis. "I was terrified and in denial," she admits. "It felt unreal that this was happening to me."

Breaking the Silence on Breast Health

At the time, discussions about breast health were nearly non-existent, mired in myths and stigma surrounding treatment. Eliza's initial fears about chemotherapy were alleviated when a friend from university, Dr. Polly Cheung, introduced her to a vibrant survivor who had successfully battled the disease. "Seeing her looking so healthy made me realize the importance of a strong support network for patients," Fok shares.

A Legacy of Support and Empowerment

Driven by her experience, Fok, alongside Cheung and a group of dedicated doctors and patients, established the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation in 2005. What started as a humble volunteer initiative has flourished into the largest network in Hong Kong, encompassing a diverse range of professionals including doctors, nurses, psychologists, and survivors. Today, it stands as a beacon of education, patient support, research, and advocacy for breast health.

Celebrating 20 Years of Impact

This year marks a significant milestone as the foundation celebrates its 20th anniversary. The festivities include various events, most notably the flagship Pink Walk, an annual charity fundraiser taking place at the Peak on October 19. This event coincides with International Breast Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting an ongoing commitment to raise awareness and support those affected by this disease.
