The Fight Against Cancer

After receiving a breast cancer diagnosis during a routine mammogram, Low faced the daunting challenge of multiple surgeries and over 15 sessions of radiation therapy. As she fought through this life-threatening battle, she found herself reevaluating what truly brought her joy and fulfillment. Following her treatment, she returned to her position at a government agency but quickly realized that the conventional career trajectory no longer resonated with her revitalized outlook on life. Just a week later, she made the courageous decision to resign.

Low reflects on her epiphany: “It occurred to me that if I keep on doing the same job, I might be missing out on life’s real experiences.” With this newfound perspective, she set her sights on something entirely different.

A New Chapter: Entering the Laundry Business

In December 2024, the spark of innovation led Low and her husband to open Hangout Laundry, a unique 24-hour self-service laundromat located in Bedok. This venture was not merely about facilitating a mundane household chore; it aimed to revolutionize how people perceive laundry day.

With a bright, air-conditioned environment, Hangout Laundry is designed for comfort and community engagement. Customers can enjoy free WiFi and hot beverages while they wait for their laundry, with washing machines priced between S$7 to S$12 and dryers costing S$1 for every five minutes. Low's vision was clear: she wanted to transform laundry from a tedious task into a delightful, social outing.

Creating a Community Hub

Low has infused her laundromat with creative energy, hosting themed events that cultivate a sense of community. One standout occasion was a Valentine's Day party featuring games, DJs, and a pop-up bar, which attracted many attendees keen to turn laundry into a lively gathering. An entry fee of S$20 included a complimentary drink, proving that even the simplest activities can be elevated into exciting social events.

Looking ahead, Low is brainstorming further community engagement opportunities, including a fittingly quirky 'Dungeons and Dragons’ night, thereby solidifying Hangout Laundry as a place where creativity and everyday chores can intertwine.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Beyond her business ambitions, Low is deeply committed to teaching her children about entrepreneurship and resilience. “I’m hopeful that my kids can also learn to be a bit more entrepreneurial,” she expressed, emphasizing her desire to impart valuable life lessons through her experiences.

Low Seow Yee’s inspiring journey from being a cancer survivor to a pioneering business owner stands as a strong testament to the spirit of reinvention.
