The New Wave of Space Innovation

Damian Galano, the Proba-3 project manager at the European Space Agency (ESA), emphasizes the mission's role in integrating newer ESA Member States like Romania, Czech Republic, and Poland into the space sector. He praises the opportunity it provides for companies to gain invaluable experience. "While we could have relied on established contractors for software, we opted for a fresh approach," he revealed. "N7 Space stepped up to the challenge and delivered remarkable results."

An Epic Software Development Journey

Finalizing the ASPIICS software required over 12,000 hours of tireless work. "Developing space software is worlds apart from mobile app development," Michał explains. Unlike apps that can be quickly patched post-launch, space software demands rigorous pre-launch testing due to its unique operational conditions. This single-client environment makes problem resolution significantly more complex, pushing N7 Space to invest in advanced simulation tools that allowed them to rigorously test the software before the satellite's assembly.

Adapting to Space Standards

The team faced numerous challenges, particularly in aligning with the demanding specifications of the space sector. This included adapting to ESA’s specialized hardware environment, typified by the LEON-3 microprocessor, unique in the industry. "Becoming compliant with the European Coordination for Space Standardisation (ECSS) processes was crucial," Michał added. "These rules govern everything from software design to testing, ensuring high reliability."

Building a Future in Space

N7 Space is not just resting on its laurels after Proba-3. The company has diversified its capabilities and is involved in multiple high-profile projects, including developing software for the Extremely Large Telescope at the European Southern Observatory. With continued support from ESA's funding programs, N7 has created pre-qualified space products that accelerate flight software development for other companies too.

Moreover, N7 Space has recently joined forces with SPACEBEL, forming a joint venture that enables collaboration with industry giants. This partnership enhances their ability to respond effectively to upcoming challenges and opportunities in the space sector.

Exciting developments are on the horizon as N7 is preparing for future missions like Ariel, signaling their unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence in space software development. With each venture, N7 Space continues solidifying its reputation as a trailblazer in the cosmic landscape, demonstrating that even the stars are within reach for ambitious new entrants in the aerospace arena!
