In an awe-inspiring twist of nature, an abandoned emu chick named Shrub is finding her way in the world, thanks to an unlikely surrogate mother—Nugget, a petite Bantam Hen—at Birdworld in Surrey, England. This heartwarming story showcases the compassionate bonds that can form even in the animal kingdom.

Shrub's journey began when she was rejected by her biological parents, Forest and Mathilda, who had their own challenges to face. Birdworld keepers discovered that although Mathilda laid her eggs, neither she nor Forest was prepared to nurture their offspring. In a desperate situation, Shrub was pulled from her nest by crows, leaving her cold, muddy, and fighting for survival.

Fortunately, the dedicated staff at Birdworld intervened just in time. After a thorough assessment, Shrub was rushed to an intensive care unit, warmed up, and quickly showed her resilience as a survivor. “Much like her father, Shrub displayed an incredible will to live,” noted Polly Bramham, the Living Collections Manager at Birdworld.

As Shrub recuperated, the task of raising her fell to Nugget. Surprisingly, the small hen took her role very seriously, imparting essential life skills to the emu chick. “Nugget instinctively understood how to teach Shrub to eat and walk, and it was a joy to see them bond,” Polly added.

Teaching Shrub wasn't without challenges. Emus are quite different from chickens and have unique behaviors that Nugget was initially unfamiliar with. Nevertheless, Shrub thrived under Nugget’s affectionate guidance, learning to navigate her surroundings despite her clumsy, gangly legs.

However, as Shrub grew, a significant decision loomed. The keepers were faced with the dilemma of introducing her to her biological parents. Emus can be notoriously reactive and aggressive, especially when feeling threatened. In order to facilitate a safe introduction, Birdworld’s caretakers implemented a gradual acclimatization process, allowing Shrub to interact with Forest and Mathilda while remaining safely outside their enclosure.

“During this critical juvenile stage, it was vital to prevent Forest and Mathilda from perceiving Shrub as a threat,” explained Polly. Evaluating her personality, keepers noted that Shrub had a cheerful disposition, often misjudging social cues and needing gentle correction.

Given their size and strength, adult emus can pose a danger, so Birdworld's team continued to keep Shrub separate from her parents at night for several months, ensuring she learned the intricacies of emu etiquette that Nugget couldn’t fully teach.

Today, Shrub’s perseverance has paid off. She now resides with her biological parents, beautifully representing the extraordinary journey from neglect to love. As she frolics around her paddock, it’s hard to believe she once faced such dire circumstances.

“Watching Shrub with Forest and Mathilda is a testament to resilience and the power of non-traditional parenting,” Polly expressed proudly. “She is truly an emu in every sense of the word and a remarkable symbol of hope.”
