SINGAPORE: A Shocking Incident

In a shocking turn of events, former actor Huang Yiliang, also known as Ng Aik Leong, found himself in legal hot water once again as he faced charges related to a serious traffic incident. On November 15, 2023, the 63-year-old Singaporean was sentenced to a hefty fine of S$3,000 (approximately US$2,230) and a staggering five-year driving ban for colliding with a cyclist last year.

The Accident Details

The accident occurred on the evening of September 20, 2022, when Huang was driving his van from a slip road at Cavenagh Road onto Bukit Timah Road. As he maneuvered from lane 1 of a two-lane slip road, Huang failed to stop at the “give way” line, leading to a collision with the 27-year-old cyclist who was riding on lane 4 of the four-lane road.

Injuries Sustained by the Cyclist

According to the court, the collision resulted in the cyclist suffering a fracture in his right elbow, along with other significant injuries, including bruising and swelling. Thankfully, the young man was conscious when emergency services arrived and was later treated at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he received seven days' hospitalisation leave, followed by an additional 50 days after further medical consultations.

Despite the serious nature of the injuries caused, Deputy Public Prosecutor Kevin Yong remarked that Huang had no prior convictions for such offenses and argued that while the injury was grievous, it was not among the most severe. Huang’s defense lawyer, Mr. James Gomez Jovian Messiah, pointed to the nighttime conditions, suggesting that Huang had trouble seeing due to glaring lights. However, it was noted that Huang chose not to provide a detailed mitigation plea to the court.
