SINGAPORE: A Shocking Incident
In a shocking turn of events, former actor Huang Yiliang, also known as Ng Aik Leong, found himself in legal hot water once again as he faced charges related to a serious traffic incident. On November 15, 2023, the 63-year-old Singaporean was sentenced to a hefty fine of S$3,000 (approximately US$2,230) and a staggering five-year driving ban for colliding with a cyclist last year.
The Accident Details
The accident occurred on the evening of September 20, 2022, when Huang was driving his van from a slip road at Cavenagh Road onto Bukit Timah Road. As he maneuvered from lane 1 of a two-lane slip road, Huang failed to stop at the “give way” line, leading to a collision with the 27-year-old cyclist who was riding on lane 4 of the four-lane road.
Injuries Sustained by the Cyclist
According to the court, the collision resulted in the cyclist suffering a fracture in his right elbow, along with other significant injuries, including bruising and swelling. Thankfully, the young man was conscious when emergency services arrived and was later treated at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he received seven days' hospitalisation leave, followed by an additional 50 days after further medical consultations.
Court Proceedings
Despite the serious nature of the injuries caused, Deputy Public Prosecutor Kevin Yong remarked that Huang had no prior convictions for such offenses and argued that while the injury was grievous, it was not among the most severe. Huang’s defense lawyer, Mr. James Gomez Jovian Messiah, pointed to the nighttime conditions, suggesting that Huang had trouble seeing due to glaring lights. However, it was noted that Huang chose not to provide a detailed mitigation plea to the court.
Huang's Driving History
Adding a twist to the story, Huang’s driving history is now under scrutiny following a previous conviction in February 2021. In that incident, he was sentenced to ten months' imprisonment for assaulting a Bangladeshi worker in 2018 and was ordered to pay S$3,300 in compensation to the victim.
Impact on Road Safety Discussions
The court’s ruling serves as a stark reminder of the importance of caution on the roads, and the consequences one may face when negligence leads to harm. Huang’s case highlights the risks faced by cyclists and other road users in Singapore, sparking debates about road safety measures and driver accountability.
What’s Next for Huang?
As Huang moves forward from this incident, it remains to be seen how this will impact his life and career. Will this incident be a turning point for the former actor, or will it signal further troubles to come? Stay tuned as we continue to cover this unfolding story.
