In a bittersweet turn of events for food lovers, two beloved establishments in Holland Village are preparing to close their doors in 2025, marking a significant shift for this once-bustling foodie hub.
End of an Era for Popular Dining Spots
After two decades of delighting diners, Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao will serve its last meal on June 30. Meanwhile, the vibrant nightlife of Wala Wala Cafe Bar, a local favorite for 32 years, may also come to an end before its lease expires at the close of 2025.
Challenges Behind the Closures
Wala Wala's owner, Stanley Yeo, cited declining foot traffic, soaring operational costs, and a tough labor market as the driving forces behind this decision. In a recent interview, he expressed hopes of finding a new tenant for the space.
The Crystal Jade Group confirmed the closure, stating its lease is ending and that they are exploring potential new outlets in various areas across Singapore. However, the group plans to maintain a presence in the region with its Crystal Jade Hong Kong Kitchen located at One Holland Village.
The Broader Impact on the Food Scene
These closures are part of a larger trend affecting the dining landscape in Singapore. Holland Village has already seen the exit of restaurants like Sens Dining and ramen chains such as Kanada-Ya, which shut down multiple locations.
The challenges extend beyond mid-range eateries, with even upscale venues succumbing to the market's pressures. Notable closures include the modern European restaurant Imbue and the one-Michelin-starred Poise, both of which have lost their battles with rising costs.
Emerging Opportunities Amidst Change
Meanwhile, some restaurants are pivoting to new locations. FOC, a modern Spanish eatery, will shut down in August for venue restoration but plans to relocate. Likewise, Choon Hoy Parlor, which recently closed in Beach Road, has reopened with an expanded offering at The Capitol Kempinski.
In Robertson Quay, previously vacated spaces are being revitalized, with establishments like Fi Woodfire Thai and Wildfire Burgers set to reopen soon, breathing new life into the area.
Going Out with a Bang
Wine RVLT, which announced it won’t renew its lease in 2025, is planning an epic farewell with its ‘Finish Finish Liao Party’ on July 12. Co-owner Alvin Gho reflected on the hardships facing the industry, noting they embrace change rather than shy away from it, and hinted at exciting plans for a new venture named Revolution Wine Bistro.
As Holland Village reshapes its identity, these closures serve as a testament to the evolving culinary scene in Singapore, reminding us that while some chapters may close, new beginnings are always on the horizon.
