SINGAPORE – The nation bid a poignant farewell to Puan Noor Aishah Mohammad Salim, the beloved widow of Singapore's first president Yusof Ishak, on April 22, as leaders gathered to celebrate her remarkable life and legacy.

Puan Noor Aishah, who passed away at the age of 91, was hailed as a champion of social causes, enriching the lives of countless Singaporeans throughout her lifetime.

The Imprint of Grace and Dignity

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong shared his personal reflections after attending her funeral at Masjid Ba'alwie, noting, "Her grace, poise, and dignity left a lasting impression on all who met her. Her legacy of selfless service will inspire generations to come." More than 500 mourners, including political and community leaders, gathered to honor her at the mosque.

A Legacy of Kindness and Contribution

Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong expressed sadness at her passing, recalling their long acquaintance since childhood. "She lived a full life and made significant contributions during Singapore’s pivotal early years of independence. Her memory will endure," he remarked.

Echoing this sentiment, Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean remarked on her embodiment of the struggles faced during Singapore’s formative years, describing her as a hero of independence.

A Lasting Impact on the Istana and Beyond

Former President Halimah Yacob reminisced about Puan Noor Aishah’s warmth and compassion, highlighting her significant role in localizing the Istana and making its culinary legacy more reflective of Singaporean culture. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam praised her efforts in teaching traditional recipes to the Istana chefs, ensuring that local favorites like epok epok remain part of its cuisine.

A Pillar in Communities and Women's Empowerment

The Singapore Muslim Women’s Association (PPIS) also commemorated her leadership as the first Patron, recognizing how her vision significantly shaped their mission and empowering women.

Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Masagos Zulkifli noted Puan Noor Aishah as a stalwart example for the Malay community, particularly inspiring young female leaders.

A Sentimental Farewell

As the funeral concluded, Singapore’s Mufti Nazirudin Mohd Nasir led the congregation in prayers before Puan Noor Aishah’s casket was solemnly transported to Kranji State Cemetery. Attendees paid their last respects, waving goodbye as her carriage made its way under the afternoon sun, symbolizing the farewell of a gentle luminary.

Puan Noor Aishah was laid to rest beside her husband, continuing her legacy of love and inspiration, forever etched in the hearts of Singaporeans.
