A Celestial Showdown You Can't Miss!
Get ready for a mesmerizing night as the 2025 Strawberry Moon rises alongside the stunning red star Antares! This captivating event occurs tonight, and you won't want to miss it.
What to Look For Tonight!
Look towards the southeast around 9:30 PM to 10:00 PM in your local time zone, and you'll spot the majestic Strawberry Moon illuminating the sky. Just above and to the right of the Moon, you'll see Antares shining brightly. Known as the 'heart of the scorpion', Antares is the dazzling star at the center of the Scorpius constellation.
Why Is Antares So Special?
Antares isn't just beautiful; its name means 'rival of Mars' in Greek, thanks to its striking reddish hue that resembles the Red Planet. But don’t be fooled—Antares is not a planet but a magnificent red supergiant nearing the end of its life.
Spotting Scorpius and Its Crown!
As you gaze at the sky, extend your viewing to the right, and you might catch a glimpse of the three stars that form Scorpius' crown: Acrab, Dschubba, and Fang. They beautifully depict the scorpion's head, while its claws have been borrowed by the nearby constellation Libra!
The Journey Continues on June 11!
Don’t forget to look up again tomorrow night! On June 11, the Strawberry Moon will have shifted even further east from Antares, giving you a fresh perspective. Watch as the Moon appears to move night after night, while the stars stay relatively fixed. This magical tracking makes the sky come alive like never before.
A Low-Flying Moon!
This year's Strawberry Moon is particularly special as it is the lowest Moon of the year, perfectly positioned near Antares, which never really rises high in the sky in northern latitudes. Tomorrow night, you’ll find it nestled in the constellation Sagittarius, located near the 'spout' of the famous Teapot asterism.
