SINGAPORE: In a groundbreaking move to support families, the newly introduced Caregiver Support Fund in the Marine Parade Cluster is set to provide caregivers of the elderly and persons with disabilities cash assistance, Grab vouchers, and respite care reimbursements, amounting to up to S$1,600 (approximately US$1,190). This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burdens faced by caregivers and enable them to secure necessary support for their loved ones.

The announcement, made during an SG60 celebration at Kampong Ubi Community Club, was spearheaded by Marine Parade MPs, including Minister for Manpower Tan See Leng and Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong, alongside other prominent local leaders. Notably, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong graced the event with his presence, sharing heartfelt reflections on his upbringing in Marine Parade. He emphasized the impressive transformation of Singapore over the past 60 years.

Support for an Ageing Population

Through the Caregiver Support Fund, eligible families can receive various forms of financial aid: up to S$700 in cash relief, maximum reimbursement of S$600 for respite care, and S$300 in Grab vouchers to assist with transportation costs associated with medical appointments. The program is expected to benefit around 2,800 families throughout the cluster, with the actual amount received contingent on household composition, income levels, and specific needs.

Families holding a blue Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS) card — which denotes a household income of S$1,500 or less per person — can qualify for the maximum benefits, accumulating to S$1,600. Meanwhile, those with an orange CHAS card, indicating incomes between S$1,501 and S$2,300, can receive up to S$500 in cash relief and additional vouchers and reimbursements based on their income brackets.

The initiative is aimed not only at providing immediate financial assistance but also supporting the growing number of caregivers due to Singapore's aging population. Care recipients must be Singapore citizens residing in the Marine Parade Cluster and could be individuals needing assistance for various reasons, including disabilities and chronic illnesses.

Empowering Youth Through Career Opportunities

In addition to supporting caregivers, an Industry Immersive Programme was also launched to connect youths aged 16 to 25 with valuable internships across numerous industries, including finance, technology, and social services. With 25 corporate partners already enlisted—such as Huawei and Deloitte Singapore—the initiative seeks to enhance career readiness for young individuals who often lack the connections necessary to secure job placements.

Participants like 19-year-old Xiang Yan Ting, who is eager to explore different fields following a productive internship, have been vocal about their enthusiasm for the new opportunities that will help bridge the gap in work experience among youths in the region.

New Community Spaces and Transport Solutions

In addition to financial aid, the Marine Parade Cluster will be enhancing community infrastructure with two new gathering spaces. These include an aquatic-themed play area and a fitness and event space designed to create more vibrant public areas for families.

Moreover, a pilot free shuttle bus service, active since July 2024, has proven beneficial for residents, facilitating easier access to polyclinics and wet markets. Officials are optimistic about extending the service further after evaluating its success over the trial period.

Future Developments Amid Electoral Changes

As the electoral landscape shifts with redrawn boundaries, new opportunities remain available for residents. While there is speculation regarding upcoming general elections, Mr. Tong confirmed that the initiatives will still extend to residents of Joo Kiat, ensuring continued support regardless of electoral changes.

In this exciting time of development and community support, residents of the Marine Parade Cluster can look forward to a richer, more connected community environment and enhanced quality of life through these innovative initiatives. Stay tuned for more updates on these initiatives and how they can enrich your life!
