Big News for Motorcyclists in Singapore!
Starting November 1, motorcycle riders in Singapore can look forward to a fantastic range of helmets—at potentially lower prices! Thanks to updated regulations that align with international safety standards, more options are set to hit the market.
What’s New in Helmet Safety Standards?
The new regulations comply with internationally recognized standards, specifically the UNECE R22.06, which are already utilized in the EU, UK, Japan, and South Korea. This shift means certain overseas-certified helmets can now make their way to Singapore without needing additional testing!
Expect More Variety and Better Pricing!
With these updates, the approval process for helmets will speed up, enabling local labs to join the certification fold, thus increasing the variety of helmets in stores. The Traffic Police stated, "This update will lead to a wider variety of approved helmets and lower prices for consumers." Currently, only one lab in Singapore is authorized to certify helmets under the old standards.
The Countdown Begins: Transition Period and Regulations
While the new standards roll out, helmets approved under the previous guidelines will still be valid until November 18, 2026. However, from November 19, 2031, those older helmets will no longer be allowed for sale.
Safety First: Helmets Should Be Updated Regularly!
Motorcyclists won’t need to rush to replace their current helmets; however, the Traffic Police recommend doing so every five years—regardless of their outward condition—as materials degrade over time.
Why the Change? The Need for Modernization!
The last major update to helmet standards was in 2014. Importers faced challenges due to outdated testing criteria that didn’t align with global standards, increasing the cost and limiting helmet availability. The previous system also favored designs that often failed in tests due to safety features like quick-release chin straps.
A Brighter Future for Motorcycle Safety in Singapore!
As motorcycle culture thrives, the president of the Singapore Motorcycle Trade Association, Rex Tan, anticipates a surge in helmet variety post-November 1. He noted the positive implications for pricing, thanks to reduced compliance costs. Riders can now gear up with confidence, knowing they have access to safer, more affordable options.
