In a surprising twist to their product lineup, Google is set to enhance the base Google Pixel 10 model by introducing a telephoto camera for the first time. This move is expected to change the game in how Google differentiates between its base and Pro models.
According to leaked documents obtained by Android Authority, the Pixel 10 series will include a telephoto camera module similar to that of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. This upgrade will provide users with an impressive 5x optical zoom capability, complemented by a 20x Super Res zoom feature. This is a significant shift, as the base Pixel models have historically lagged behind Pro versions regarding camera hardware since the inception of the Pixel 6 series in 2021.
However, potential buyers should temper their enthusiasm. Reports indicate that the primary sensor on the Pixel 10 is set to be smaller than its predecessor—transitioning from a 1/1.31-inch sensor to a 1/1.95-inch sensor—potentially compromising low-light photography performance. Furthermore, the ultra-wide camera sensor is also anticipated to shrink, with a downgrade from a 48MP sensor to a 13MP one, and a shift from a 1/2.55-inch size to a 1/3.1-inch size. These changes suggest that while the addition of a telephoto lens is exciting, the overall camera setup may resemble a refreshed Pixel 9a, now with an extra feature.
As for the higher-end models, the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL are reportedly not receiving any significant hardware upgrades in their camera systems. Meanwhile, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is expected to switch from a Sony to a Samsung sensor for its primary camera, moving from the IMX787 (64MP, 1/1.73-inch) to the GN8 (50MP, 1/1.95-inch).
Despite these hardware constraints, Google may implement innovative software enhancements to enrich the camera experience. Following the introduction of AI-powered image editing tools in the Pixel 9 series, including features like "Add Me" for group photos and “Auto Frame” for better composition, it’s likely that the Pixel 10 series will roll out new software advancements to make the most of its existing capabilities.
With these exciting developments, tech enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the official launch of the Pixel 10 series, hoping that Google can pair compelling software with its new telephoto lens, making photography on handheld devices more versatile and fun than ever before! Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the release date!
