Ethiopia Takes a Bold Step Against Malaria

In a monumental achievement for global health, Ethiopia has officially become the first country to introduce the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine, a significant leap in the fight against one of Africa's most lethal diseases. This innovative initiative coincides with the distribution of insecticide-treated nets, targeting children in 58 high-risk districts.

Boasting 186,000 doses ready for deployment, Ethiopia's combined strategy provides a robust defense against malaria, showing promise for reducing infection rates among vulnerable populations.

The R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine was developed by researchers at the University of Oxford in partnership with the Serum Institute of India and Novavax. Clinical trials, published in 2021, showcased an impressive efficacy rate of up to 77%. The World Health Organization endorsed its use in children under three in 2023, marking a significant advancement in malaria prevention.
