Introducing the Heart Fund for Migrant Workers

In a groundbreaking move, Singapore's charity group ItsRainingRaincoats (IRR) has launched the Heart Fund, providing essential financial support to migrant workers facing emergencies. This initiative was unveiled at a celebratory luncheon marking IRR's 10th anniversary on September 21.

Swift Support for Those in Need

The Heart Fund is designed to facilitate immediate assistance for workers caught in crises, whether due to accidents or urgent health issues. Traditionally, fund-raising efforts were case-specific and often took weeks, leaving many without timely help. IRR founder Dipa Swaminathan expressed the urgency of this new approach: “Before this fund, we had to start a new appeal for each case, which was dependent on the worker’s consent to publicize their story.”

A Successful Launch Event

The launch event saw incredible turnout, with over 200 attendees including donors, IRR partners, and volunteers. During the festivities, a stunning runway show and live auction raised approximately $120,000, bolstering the Heart Fund and supporting IRR's operational costs.

Real-Life Impact: The Story of Kasirajan Ravi

Kasirajan Ravi’s poignant story exemplifies the Heart Fund's purpose. After losing his job as a manufacturing worker in 2021, he swiftly sought IRR’s assistance. The charity coordinated with authorities to secure a special permit, allowing him extra time for necessary investigations before his return to India, where he received $1,500 to help cover expenses.

A Decade of Dedication

Since its inception in 2015, IRR has made impressive strides in supporting Singapore's migrant worker community. The charity has distributed over 1.1 million meals, donated 650,000 essential items, and organized excursions for over 48,000 workers. Their recent opening of a store in Bukit Merah allows workers to access free clothing, toiletries, and more.

Fostering Community Support

The Heart Fund marks only one of the several initiatives aimed at bridging the financial gaps for migrant workers. Other efforts like the CritiCare Fund launched by social entrepreneur Anthea Ong help cover medical costs when insurance falls short.

A Call for Compassion and Action

Looking ahead, Dipa emphasizes the need for ongoing public engagement and compassion. Encouraging simple acts of kindness, she urges the community to show respect and gratitude towards migrant workers, whom she describes as invaluable contributors to society.

Government Support and Future Vision

Addressing the guests, Manpower Minister Tan See Leng highlighted the collaborative effort between IRR and government bodies in enhancing the welfare of migrant workers. He noted improvements in worker education regarding rights and healthcare access, paving the way for a more inclusive environment.

Join the Movement to Support Migrant Workers!

As IRR gears up for the next decade, their mission remains focused on empathy, activism, and empowerment. With a dedicated team of volunteers, they are determined to build a more supportive community for migrant workers who play a vital role in Singapore’s economy.
