In a dramatic turn of events, a Qantas flight en route from London to Sydney was diverted to Azerbaijan due to a medical emergency. The incident occurred on June 9 when a woman in her 60s experienced a life-threatening cardiac episode mid-air, prompting an urgent landing in Baku.
Thanks to the quick response of three doctors on board, the passenger was stabilized during the flight. Dr. Hamish Urquhart, one of the physicians, described the situation as frantic but managed. "The lady was really quite unwell and needed intravenous access while we were trying to land, which was a bit challenging," he recounted to ABC News.
To reach Heydar Aliyev International Airport, one of the few capable of accommodating the massive Airbus A380, the pilot executed a dramatic 180-degree turn. This airport, located strategically between Russia and Iran, allowed for the safe arrival of the aircraft.
After landing at Baku at 7:55 AM local time, the injured passenger was promptly transported to a nearby hospital. Meanwhile, flight tracking data revealed that Flight QF2 had initially departed from London Heathrow at 8:51 PM on June 8.
Due to crew duty limits following the diversion, the flight was unable to continue to Singapore on the same day. Qantas has arranged overnight accommodations for over 400 affected passengers, ensuring they’d have a place to stay before the rescheduled departure to Changi on June 10.
A spokesperson for Qantas expressed their apologies for the disruption, stating, "Our QF2 London to Singapore service diverted to Baku earlier today due to a medical incident on board. We are working diligently to get our customers to Singapore as soon as possible."
