SINGAPORE – A disturbing case of familial violence has emerged as Koh Kui Chua, a 43-year-old man, faces serious charges after allegedly assaulting his 73-year-old father, resulting in significant injuries.
In a hearing on May 15, Koh was slapped with two assault charges stemming from incidents that took place in their home on Bangkit Road. Court documents reveal that on September 11, 2024, Koh reportedly unleashed his fury on his father's hands, inflicting fractures that have yet to heal.
The violence did not end there; Koh is also accused of a brutal punch to his father's face earlier this year on January 7, 2025.
Anticipating his plea, Koh is expected to admit guilt when he returns to court in June.
This alarming case is not isolated. Recent years have seen a troubling rise in familial assaults, particularly against parents. A striking example surfaced in February 2024, when a 17-year-old was sentenced to two years of probation for multiple assaults on his mother in 2022 that resulted in a rib fracture. Shockingly, the mother suffered in silence, with her husband witnessing the abuse without intervening.
In another heart-wrenching tale, a 58-year-old man was handed a seven-month jail sentence in December 2023 for a vicious attack on his mother, who was then 78, during which he broke her nose.
This unsettling trend underscores the need for greater awareness and intervention in cases of elder abuse.
