Witness a Celestial Marvel in the UAE!

Get ready for a spectacular cosmic event, as a rare total lunar eclipse—a mesmerizing phenomenon popularly known as the Blood Moon—will light up the UAE sky this Sunday evening. This breathtaking celestial display will unfold over a generous five and a half hours, as the Moon gracefully glides through Earth's shadow.

A Cosmic Show for All!

Skywatchers from around the world and especially in the UAE are in for an astonishing treat. "This is one of the standout astronomical events happening in the UAE in 2025," shared Khadijah Ahmed, operations manager at the Dubai Astronomy Group. The best part? You don't need any fancy equipment—simply step outside and look up!

A Global Spectacle!

This eclipse will be visible to a staggering 87% of the world's population, delighting viewers in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe, and Australia.

Mark Your Calendars: Timeline of Events!

The magical journey begins at 7:28 PM GST, when the Moon will enter the Earth's faint outer shadow— known as the penumbral phase. At 8:27 PM, look for a dark bite appearing on the Moon's surface. The show reaches its peak at 9:30 PM when totality occurs, transforming the Moon into an awe-inspiring shade of red. Peak visibility of the eclipse will be at 10:12 PM, lasting until 10:53 PM.

Why the Blood Moon Happens!

Wondering why this stunning transformation occurs? A total lunar eclipse happens when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align perfectly, casting Earth's shadow across the Moon. Instead of fading away, the Moon shines in striking reds and oranges due to sunlight bending through the Earth's atmosphere, creating the enchanting Blood Moon effect.

Where to Experience the Magic!

While the eclipse can be spotted across all seven emirates, for a communal viewing experience, head over to the Mohammed bin Rashid Library, where the Dubai Astronomy Group is hosting a public event from 7 PM to 11 PM. Tickets are reasonably priced at Dh250 ($68) for adults and Dh200 for children, featuring telescopes and exciting astronomy-themed activities!

Catch the Global Broadcast!

Can't make it in person? The Dubai Astronomy Group is also orchestrating a global livestream, teaming up with observatories from over a dozen countries including Spain, Australia, India, and Egypt, to bring the magic of the Blood Moon right to your home! Plus, they plan on capturing breathtaking images of the Moon eclipsed over the iconic Burj Khalifa.

The Countdown Begins for the Next One!

If you miss this enchanting spectacle, you're in for a long wait! The next lunar eclipse won't occur until July 6, 2028, and that will only be a partial eclipse. But mark your calendars for December 31, 2028—a New Year's Eve extravaganza that promises another long-lasting total lunar eclipse!
