SINGAPORE – Get ready for a lively 15th Parliament as Speaker Seah Kian Peng reveals that with today’s global uncertainties, Singaporeans can expect more robust debates and a surge in parliamentary activity.
While more MPs means more voices in the House, Seah emphasizes that quantity should not overshadow the quality of discussions. In an exclusive interview with The Straits Times, he expressed concern over a rising tendency among MPs to ask questions merely to increase their tally. "We shouldn't treat this like a numbers game. It’s counterproductive," he stated.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has announced plans to re-elect Seah as Speaker when Parliament resumes on September 5. As the 11th Speaker since 2023, Seah aims to elevate the overall debate quality. He believes this is crucial, particularly as the parliamentary number swells from 93 to 99 members, including an increased presence of women MPs.
In an effort to prepare new MPs, orientation briefings are now being held, ensuring they understand parliamentary procedures and effectively represent their constituents. Seah advised colleagues to prioritize the real needs of the people over performing for an audience. That involves being willing to disagree respectfully rather than asking redundant questions.
As Singapore's largest Parliament yet, it includes 31 women MPs—a sign of progress that Seah is optimistic will continue in the future. He firmly believes that a diverse assembly leads to better policymaking, representing a wider array of views.
With just two main political parties represented now—the ruling People’s Action Party and the Workers’ Party—Seah reiterates his commitment to impartiality in his role. Not unlike a football referee, he aims to enforce rules fairly, ensuring every MP adheres to parliamentary conduct.
Maintaining transparency is also on Seah’s agenda; he plans to elevate Parliament's outreach to everyday Singaporeans. Since 2021, live-streaming sessions have made it easier for citizens to tune in, with exciting new projects underway, including a virtual Parliament experience on Roblox, aimed at engaging younger generations.
Seah highlights his role in fostering international relations, sharing experiences with ambassadors and leaders from various countries, further strengthening Singapore’s global standing.
Although Seah misses his previous roles in corporate leadership, he finds value in his new position. He relishes engaging with fellow MPs and facilitating rich debates that serve the interests of all Singaporeans.
