In a proactive response to increasing safety concerns and an expected surge in tourists for the upcoming Chinese New Year, the picturesque city of Otaru in Hokkaido, Japan, has begun deploying security guards around its famed Funamizaka slope. These guards, equipped with multilingual signs in English, Chinese, and Korean, will remain stationed in the area through the end of March, as reported by Kyodo News.

The implementation of security measures comes in the wake of rising complaints from local residents about tourists obstructing traffic while attempting to capture the perfect photo of the scenic slope, which was immortalized in the 1995 film Love Letter. Visitors from all over flock to this spot for its breathtaking views of the sea, but this influx has necessitated increased regulation to ensure public safety and ease local concerns.

Local authorities have not only deployed security personnel but have also heightened police patrols in the popular tourist area. Eighty-year-old resident Hidetoshi Itagaki remarked on the situation, noting that previous to these measures, many tourists had taken to trespassing in their search for ideal photo opportunities. Thanks to the new regulations, there has been a noticeable reduction in instances of tourists blocking roads.

Tragically, these security measures were hastened following a fatal incident involving a Hong Kong tourist. On January 23, a 61-year-old woman lost her life after being struck by a train while attempting to photograph the sea in a restricted area. This unfortunate event is a harrowing reminder of the potential dangers that can accompany scenic tourism.

In light of this incident, Hokkaido Railway is now considering implementing safety announcements in both English and Chinese on their trains to ensure that visitors can stay safe while enjoying Otaru's beautiful landscapes. As local officials strive to balance tourist enthusiasm with safety, Otaru’s commitment to enhancing visitor information signals an important step towards preserving its charm while protecting both residents and tourists alike.

As Otaru gears up for the bustling holiday season, the hope is that increased awareness and safety measures can prevent further tragedies, allowing everyone to fully enjoy the stunning natural beauty this coastal city has to offer.
